Hodge Index to the Christian Banner, 1850, and 1862

The Christian Banner newspaper first published in Fredericksburg, Virginia in Dec. 1848 and ceased in August 1862. It was established by James W. Hunnicutt who published it until August 1862.
The microfilmed collection of Fredericksburg newspapers in the Virginiana Room of the Central Rappahannock Regional Library (CRRL), 1201 Caroline Street, Fredericksburg, Virginia has three reels of microfilm (cataloged as #1, #2, and #23) that include miscellaneous issues of the Christian Banner. Of these the issues on Reel #23 are completely duplicated on Reels #1 and #2. Microfilm Reel #1 includes issues for 6 Sep 1850, 17 May 1862, 20 May 1862, 27 May 1862, 7 Jun 1862, 14 Jun 1862, 18 Jun 1862, 2 Jul 1862, 14 Jul 1862, and 13 Aug 1862; Reel #2 includes issues for 31 May 1862, 11 Jun 1862, and 24 Jun 1862.
The Christian Banner was renumbered with Vol. 1 in 1862. It was suspended May 9, 1861 because "the secession flag...was waving over our city." It resumed publication May 9, 1862; "today the American Flag now floats proudly over us."
The index was prepared by Robert Hodge. The issues were scanned for items deemed of value to the LOCAL historian and genealogist. Each entry consists of essentially four parts: Name, Reason for being, Publication date, and Page/Column numbers. The electronic version was created by the Center for Historic Preservation at Mary Washington College by scanning a copy of the text and then modifying the format to fit a table. Comments, or corrections to this index should be sent to Gary Stanton at Mary Washington College. gstanton@umw.edu

The microfilm reels of the Christian Banner are available in Fredericksburg at the Central Rappahannock Regional Library and at Simpson Library at Mary Washington College.
