Spotsylvania Court Records Will Book A, page 276 Known all men by these presents that we Henry Willis & John Taliaferro of Spotsylvania County Gent a [torn] and firmly bound unto our Lord the King in the penal Sum of one hundred & Eighteen Thousand pounds of Tobo. To which Payment will and Truly To be made we bind our Selves our [torn] & each of our heirs Exrs and Admrs Joyntly and Severally firm by these presents Witnefs our hands and Seal this Sixth day of October 1736 The Condition of the above Obligation is Such that whereas the above bounden Henry Willis hath undertaken to Erect and build a brick Court house at Fredericksburgh of the Dimensions and form herein after mentioned to wit the house to be forty Eight foote long and Twenty four foote Wide in the Clear with a Side building Thereto Twenty four foote Long & Twelve foote Wide in ye Clear all the brick about the said Building to be well made well burnt and well Laid in good Lime Morter. All the walls of the sd Building To be Three Bricks Thick from the Bottom of the foundation to the Highest parts of the Surface of the ground whiere it Shall be Erected and Two and one half to ye Water Table from Thence Two brick Thick to the Top of the brick work. The Wall To be Eighteen foote high of Brick from the highest parts of ye Surface of ye ground it stands on to have Eight Windows four to the Body of ye Court & Two to each Small Room herein after Mentioned Each Windows to be Three foot wide & Nine foot Long within ye Case to be Done with Crown glafs from London. To have Eight Arches or Piazas in the out Side wall fronting ye Courte. The Pillers To be well Done To have four Doors Two fronting ye Court filling up Two Large Arches to have a Brick Chimney to Each Small Room the roof of the sd building to be well covered with Cyprefs Shingles well tarred to have a Modilion Cornice all the wood about ye Cornice, Windows, Doors, and all the Inside wooden work To be well Laid and Painted with White Lead & Oyle the inside of ye sd buildings about the Justices bench to be good Wainscot work and the Doors, also the Lawyers Barr Clerks Table & Justices Bench to be Erected of a Proper Height all the Flowers back of ye Lawyers barr to be Laid with flagg Stone the other flowers to be well Laid with Good Inch & Half pine plank without any lap. To be Two Small Rooms in ye sd buildings, Each fourteen foot Long & Twelve Wide the Corners of ye Buildings round the Doors and Windows to be made of good Rubbed Brick To be a handsom Chair for the Judge of ye Court with a Canopy over it all the sd building to be Done and finished in the beste and handsomest Manner on or by the Time of Laying this County Levy in the Year of our Lord One thousand Seven hundred & Thirty Eight or before the Last payment to be Made Now if the sd Henry Willis his heirs Exectrs or Admsrs Shall well and Truly perform the sd work in the Manner And by the Time before Exprefsed that Then the above Obligation to be Void Otherwise to remain & be in full force Power & Virtue Hen Willis Jn Taliaferro Signd Sealed & Delivered the words (in the Clear) in the Sixth line of ye Condition interlined.
