Maps of Fredericksburg that identify the building footprints in the city are first produced in the 1870s. Gray's New Map of 1878 represents buildings with solid squares and rectangles. Gray's New Map is a single map sheet. The more informative maps were produced by the Sanborn Fire Insurance Map Company beginning in 1886. The Sanborn maps were drawn to a scale of 40 feet to the inch and give information about massing, walling materials and roofing materials. The Sanborn Map Company produced new maps for Fredericksburg in 1886, 1892, 1896, 1902, 1907, 1912, 1919 and 1927. After 1927 the Sanborn Map company provided thin paper corrections that were pasted over the 1927 base map. Over the forty years as new maps had been drawn, the maps also increased their coverage of the town. In 1886 the map covers only the densest core of Fredericksburg. By 1927 the map included much, but not all the property within the City boundaries.
The earliest surviving Land Book produced for the City of Fredericksburg is 1930. This book covers the entire area of the City. These maps are not as detailed as the Sanborn Maps, but properties often have the penciled name of the owner on the lot, the number of running feet of frontage, and other special characteristics.
